So, can a plumber install a boiler?
When you have a problem with any aspect of the water supply in your home, it’s easy to think that calling a plumber is the fix-all solution. After all, they work with water and pipes – they know what they’re doing.
We’re not knocking plumbers, but chances are good that you might end up calling out the wrong person. There are good reasons for this, and they certainly don’t apply to everybody, but we want to make sure you’re getting the right tradesperson for the job. So, can a plumber install a boiler?
Plumber vs Gas Engineer
Plumber
Plumbers can work on many aspects of the heating system in your home. They can repair and replace radiators, piping, water tanks, and the thermostatic valves that control individual radiators. In this sense, they can work on your heating. Whether or not they can actually work on your boiler itself is another question.
A plumber might well have undergone the necessary training to become registered Gas Safe, but it’s important to note that this isn’t mandatory for their job. A fully qualified plumber doesn’t need to know how to install a gas boiler, which is why many won’t be able to do it (at least, not legally. Yes, that matters!).
Gas Engineer
A gas (or heating) engineer, on the other hand, does what it says on the tin. You should be able to check their name on the Gas Safe register and fully vet their credentials, ensuring you’re getting a trader who knows what they’re doing and that they can do it safely.
This is important for your guarantees and warranties as well as your own safety.

Can a Plumber Ever Install a Boiler?
Sometimes, yes – only if they are Gas Safe registered.
Although a plumber doesn’t need to have Gas Safe credentials, they might get them to make themselves a more versatile trader. If their details check out as Gas Safe registered, and they get good reviews, go for it.
We would strongly advise against trying to get a plumber to install a boiler and having somebody on the Gas Safe register to check their work over later. It’s illegal for an unregistered trader to work with gas. It’s incredibly unlikely another professional will put their name on the line to sign off on work they haven’t done themselves, especially by somebody who wasn’t fully qualified.
